Philips CPAP and BiPAP machines have been recalled by the manufacturer due to toxic chemical exposure. Patients use these machines daily to treat sleep apnea. In June of 2021, Philips recalled millions of units after discovering an issue with the foam used to quiet the function of the machines. The foam was found to contain materials that could release toxic fumes and be inhaled by the CPAP users. By September of 2021, the company got FDA approval for a revision to correct the issue; however, for many users, the damage had already been done.

Understanding More About CPAP Machines and This Serious Health Hazard

People with sleep apnea can stop breathing hundreds of times each night. They wake up gasping for air and can suffer other health issues and increased risks due to this condition. In addition, sleep apnea is more common in obese people because of the added internal pressure on their airways. So, these sufferers are more likely to develop complications due to sleep apnea because of their increased health risks due to their weight.

CPAP machines, continuous positive airway pressure units, help allow the user to sleep uninterrupted by keeping air pressure flowing into the airway. This prevents the collapse of the airway and the pause in breathing, resulting in suddenly waking while gasping for air. The mask used with the CPAP is fitted securely over the nose and mouth to constantly force air into the lungs and prevent the user’s airway from collapsing. Not only do the users get a full night’s sleep and avoid the startling awakening as they choke and struggle to breathe, but the unit also ensures a more constant oxygen level throughout their sleep for a more refreshed feeling when they awaken.

What Is Causing the Toxic Chemical Exposure?

Many of the Philips CPAP units use polyurethane foam to reduce the noise created by the machine. However, it was discovered that the polyurethane foam was degrading, and tiny particles of the substance were being inhaled by users. After testing the particles, they were found to contain cancer-causing chemicals including toluenediamine. Due to extended exposure to these chemicals from breathing via the CPAP for many hours each night, users reported many respiratory issues including:
